Discover the canals and harbour

Gothenburg was founded in the early 17th century and its original city plan was strongly influenced by Dutch urban design. The canals remain a defining feature of the centre.

One of the most popular ways to see them is from the water. Sightseeing boats travel through the canals and harbour, providing a useful introduction to Gothenburg’s history and architecture.

Walking is equally rewarding. Follow the water through the centre towards the harbour, where the city’s maritime past meets modern redevelopment. The Gothenburg Opera occupies a prominent position on the waterfront, while ferries constantly move across and along the Göta River.
