One of the symbols of Gothenburg’s culinary heritage is Feskekörka – literally “the Fish Church”. The distinctive 19th-century building resembles a Gothic church but was constructed as an indoor fish market.
Today it remains one of Gothenburg’s best-known landmarks and a natural destination for visitors interested in seafood. The renovated market hall combines fish and shellfish with restaurants and bars, making it a good place to discover the flavours associated with Sweden’s west coast.
A classic Gothenburg seafood experience does not necessarily have to be complicated. Fresh prawns served with bread and mayonnaise, a bowl of mussels, fried or poached fish, or an open sandwich piled with prawns can be every bit as memorable as an elaborate tasting menu.
For something particularly Swedish, look for räkmacka – an open-faced prawn sandwich, usually generously topped with prawns and accompanied by ingredients such as egg, mayonnaise, lemon and dill.
