Travellers looking for a more neighbourhood-oriented experience may prefer the areas around Haga, Linné and Majorna.
Haga is one of Gothenburg’s most famous historic districts. Its cobbled streets, traditional wooden buildings, cafés and independent shops give it a very different atmosphere from the modern city centre. Accommodation directly in Haga is limited compared with central Gothenburg, but staying nearby provides easy access to both the old quarter and the lively Linné district.
Linné is known for restaurants, cafés and bars and sits close to Slottsskogen, one of Gothenburg’s largest and most popular parks. Continue west and the atmosphere gradually becomes more residential and alternative. Majorna, once closely associated with dock workers and the maritime industries, is today known for cafés, second-hand shops, restaurants and a creative local character.
These districts are well connected to the centre by tram, making them attractive alternatives for visitors who want to experience everyday Gothenburg rather than staying directly among the main tourist attractions.
