No first visit to Gothenburg is complete without considering a trip to the archipelago.
The Gothenburg archipelago consists of numerous islands, each with its own character. The southern islands are especially accessible and are largely car-free, making them ideal for walking, swimming and relaxed day trips.
Styrsö is one of the larger islands and offers walking routes, small communities and beautiful coastal scenery. Brännö has a strong island identity and is popular for summer excursions, while Vrångö, further south, provides a quieter atmosphere and excellent access to nature.
The journey is part of the attraction. Public ferries carry passengers between the islands, and the transition from busy city streets to open sea and granite shores can happen surprisingly quickly.
In summer, bring swimwear and spend part of the day on the rocks beside the sea. During autumn and winter, the islands offer a completely different experience: fewer visitors, crisp air and dramatic coastal landscapes.
