Not every food experience needs to involve a formal restaurant. One of the easiest ways to experience Swedish culture is through fika.
Fika is often translated simply as a coffee break, but that description misses part of the point. It is a social ritual: an opportunity to sit down, drink coffee and enjoy something sweet while taking a break from work, shopping or sightseeing.
Gothenburg has an abundance of traditional bakeries and contemporary cafés. Cinnamon buns – kanelbullar – are the classic choice, although cardamom buns, cakes, pastries and sandwiches are also common.
Haga is particularly famous for its cafés and enormous cinnamon buns. The neighbourhood can become busy during weekends and the summer season, but sitting down for coffee among its historic streets remains a classic Gothenburg experience.
