Some of the best moments in Gothenburg do not require a ticket.
Ride a tram through neighbourhoods you would otherwise miss. Walk beside the canals. Buy fresh prawns and find somewhere overlooking the water. Have coffee in a century-old café. Wander through Slottsskogen on a Sunday morning or take a ferry across the Göta River (Göta älv) simply to see the city from another angle.
Gothenburg works particularly well as a city to explore without an overly rigid itinerary. Distances are manageable, public transport is extensive and interesting neighbourhoods are scattered throughout the urban area.
The weather can change quickly on Sweden’s west coast, so flexibility is useful. A sunny morning might be perfect for the archipelago, while a rainy afternoon can be spent in museums, cafés and market halls.
