For visitors who prefer informal dining, Gothenburg’s market halls are worth exploring. Stora Saluhallen, located close to the city centre, contains food shops, delicatessens and places to eat, offering an easy introduction to both Swedish and international flavours.
Elsewhere, the city has embraced modern street food, small independent restaurants and casual dining. Areas such as Linné, Majorna, Järntorget and the increasingly creative districts around Hisingen offer plenty of alternatives to the more established restaurants in the centre.
Gothenburg is also well known for craft beer. The city has developed one of Scandinavia’s most active brewing scenes, with numerous local breweries, taprooms and beer-focused bars. Visitors interested in beer can easily build an evening around sampling Gothenburg-produced ales and lagers alongside casual food.
Vegetarian and vegan visitors are also well catered for. Plant-based food is widely available, and many mainstream restaurants offer vegetarian alternatives rather than treating them as an afterthought.
