White Guide Restaurants in Gothenburg

Gothenburg has developed into one of Sweden’s most interesting food destinations. The city offers everything from relaxed neighbourhood restaurants and Italian trattorias to ambitious tasting menus where dinner becomes the main event of the evening.

One way to find some of the city’s best places to eat is to look at the White Guide restaurants in Gothenburg.

White Guide rates restaurants at several different levels and considers more than just the food. The overall experience is important, with restaurants divided into categories including Recommended, Fine Level, Very Fine Level and Master Class.

Here are some of the Gothenburg restaurants featured in White Guide – and what you can expect when you visit.

SK Mat & Människor

Located on Johannebergsgatan, SK Mat & Människor is rated Master Class by White Guide.

Modern Swedish cuisine and Swedish ingredients are at the heart of the experience, with a strong emphasis on seasonality and craftsmanship. The open kitchen also allows guests to get close to the work that goes into each dish.

This is a good choice when you want dinner to be one of the highlights of your trip to Gothenburg.

Koka

Koka on Viktoriagatan is another Gothenburg restaurant rated Master Class by White Guide.

The cuisine is modern Swedish, with the relationship between food and drink playing an important part in the experience. It is an excellent choice for couples looking for a memorable dinner during a weekend in Gothenburg.

Expect a complete dining experience rather than somewhere to simply stop for a quick meal.

Bhoga

Centrally located on Norra Hamngatan, Bhoga is another of Gothenburg’s Master Class restaurants.

High culinary ambitions are combined with a relatively relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen has a distinctly New Nordic approach, and White Guide also highlights the restaurant’s strong interest in beverages.

Bhoga is a good choice if you want ambitious cooking without the restaurant feeling overly formal.

Vrå

Vrå is located inside Clarion Hotel Post at Drottningtorget and offers something slightly different from the other Master Class restaurants in Gothenburg.

Here, influences from Japan meet ingredients and traditions from Sweden’s west coast.

Its location is particularly convenient for visitors, as the restaurant is right next to Gothenburg Central Station and Drottningtorget.

Vrå is worth considering if you want something different from the modern Swedish cuisine found at several of Gothenburg’s leading restaurants.

28+

Restaurant 28+ on Götabergsgatan is a veteran of the Gothenburg restaurant scene and is also rated Master Class by White Guide.

The atmosphere is intimate and classic, and the restaurant is particularly well known for its interest in wine and cheese.

You do not primarily come here in search of the latest restaurant trend.

You come for an established Gothenburg restaurant that has maintained a high standard for a very long time.

Bulot

Bulot combines ambitious cooking with a more relaxed restaurant atmosphere and is rated Master Class by White Guide.

It is a good choice if you appreciate creative cuisine but do not necessarily want the formal atmosphere sometimes associated with fine dining.

Bulot is also connected to Bar Bulot inside Stora Saluhallen, Gothenburg’s main market hall, offering another way to experience the kitchen’s style.

Human

You will find Human on Risåsgatan, below Skansen Kronan.

White Guide places the restaurant at Very Fine Level. Behind Human is Martin Moses, a winner of Sweden’s prestigious Chef of the Year competition, and the restaurant has a clear fine-dining ambition.

Human serves a set menu based around modern Swedish cuisine.

It is a good choice for a long dinner where the food is allowed to take time.

Project

Project on Södra Vägen is only a short walk from Götaplatsen and Korsvägen.

The restaurant is rated Very Fine Level and combines ambitious cooking with a relatively small and personal setting.

Its location is particularly convenient for visitors. You could, for example, spend the day around Universeum, World of Volvo or the Gothenburg Museum of Art before finishing with a much more ambitious dinner in the evening.

Carbon

At Carbon, the concept is a little different.

White Guide rates the restaurant at Very Fine Level, and guests are given choices throughout the tasting menu. Different courses may offer alternatives such as vegetarian dishes, fish or meat.

This makes Carbon an interesting option for a group where everyone wants to enjoy a longer tasting menu but does not necessarily want to eat exactly the same dishes.

Familjen

If you want high-quality food in a slightly more relaxed Gothenburg setting, Familjen on Arkivgatan is worth considering.

White Guide rates Familjen at Very Fine Level and describes a modern Swedish kitchen working with ingredients and producers from the surrounding region.

It is the kind of restaurant that works equally well for a couple spending a weekend in Gothenburg or a group wanting an excellent dinner without the evening feeling too formal.

Trattoria La Strega

Not all great food in Gothenburg is modern Swedish cuisine.

Trattoria La Strega on Aschebergsgatan is rated Very Fine Level by White Guide and instead offers Italian cooking in a small and personal setting.

It is also the kind of restaurant that visitors can easily miss.

You are unlikely to simply stumble across it while walking between Nordstan and Liseberg.

And sometimes those are exactly the restaurants you want to discover while travelling.

Bord 27

Bord 27 on Haga Kyrkogata is a good example of how a White Guide restaurant does not have to mean white tablecloths and an elaborate tasting menu.

The restaurant is rated Fine Level and has only a limited number of seats. The atmosphere is closer to a personal neighbourhood restaurant, serving modern Swedish food with influences from several different cuisines.

A good choice if you value atmosphere as highly as formal fine dining.

Restaurang Natur

Restaurang Natur is located on Geijersgatan and is rated Fine Level.

Modern Swedish cooking is combined with a strong interest in natural wines. The restaurant is small and personal and is particularly suitable for diners who consider the drinks to be just as important as the food.

Tavolo

If the setting is an important part of your restaurant experience, Tavolo is difficult to ignore.

The restaurant occupies the old Artilleristallarna – former artillery stables – and is rated Fine Level by White Guide. The food is Italian, but the enormous dining room is almost as much a part of the experience as the menu.

There is also a gigantic horse’s head in the middle of the restaurant.

So if you are looking for somewhere that will give you something to talk about afterwards, Tavolo is certainly an option.

More White Guide restaurants in Gothenburg

The list does not end there. White Guide also includes restaurants such as Skanshof, Atelier, Umarell, Mestiza and Tapasbaren among its Gothenburg recommendations.

That variety is one of the things that makes the guide useful.

You do not have to book the most expensive tasting menu in town to eat at a White Guide restaurant in Gothenburg. The selection ranges from ambitious fine dining to considerably more relaxed restaurants.

Which White Guide restaurant in Gothenburg should you choose?

Start by deciding what kind of evening you want.

If you want dinner to be one of the major food experiences of your trip, begin with Master Class restaurants such as SK Mat & Människor, Koka, Bhoga, Vrå, 28+ and Bulot.

If you want excellent food in a more relaxed atmosphere, restaurants such as Familjen, Bord 27, Natur and Tapasbaren may be better choices.

And if you want to combine food with a memorable setting, places such as Tavolo, Atelier or Umarell could be worth considering.

Book your table in advance

The most important advice is simple:

Book ahead.

Several of Gothenburg’s most popular White Guide restaurants have a limited number of tables, and attractive Friday and Saturday evening slots can fill up well in advance.

Always check the restaurant’s current menu, prices and opening hours before visiting. White Guide reviews are useful for inspiration, but restaurants change and some reviews on the website may be several years old.

Personal tip

Do not treat White Guide as a league table where the restaurant with the highest rating is automatically the right choice.

Use it as inspiration.

One evening you might want a tasting menu at Koka.

The next evening, a small neighbourhood restaurant such as Bord 27 might be exactly what you are looking for.

And at some point during your visit to Gothenburg, I still think you should have a halv special – a classic Gothenburg hot dog topped with mashed potatoes – from a local street-food kiosk.

A great food city should have room for both.
