Gothenburg Radio Museum

Gothenburg has several museums that rarely appear on first-time visitor itineraries, and the Radio Museum is a perfect example. If old technology, broadcasting or communications interest you, this is the sort of specialised collection that can become an unexpected highlight.

The museum tells the story of radio technology through equipment rather than grand spectacle. Expect receivers, transmitters and communication devices from different periods, with connections to broadcasting, maritime communication, military technology and amateur radio.

A museum for curious visitors

You do not need to be a radio enthusiast to appreciate how dramatically communication has changed within a few generations. Objects that once represented cutting-edge technology now look wonderfully mechanical beside the tiny devices we carry every day.

I particularly like small specialist museums because they often preserve stories that larger institutions have little room to tell. Gothenburg’s history is closely connected to engineering, shipping and industry, and communication technology fits naturally into that story.

Not your standard Gothenburg attraction

This is not where I would send someone with only three hours in the city. But if you have already seen the major attractions, enjoy technical history or simply prefer unusual museums, put it on your list.

Smaller museums can have more limited opening arrangements than major attractions, so check current visiting information before making a special trip. That little bit of planning is worthwhile: places like the Radio Museum show a side of Gothenburg that disappears completely if you only follow the standard tourist route.
