Gothenburg is not usually marketed as a spa destination, but there are surprisingly good options if you want to add a few quiet hours to a city break. You can choose between historic bathhouse surroundings, modern hotel spas and larger spa resorts towards the edge of the city.

For atmosphere, Hagabadet is the obvious place to start. Its historic setting gives the experience a character that is difficult to reproduce in a modern hotel. It also fits naturally into a day exploring Haga, Linné and the western parts of central Gothenburg.

Hotel spas and city views

If you prefer contemporary surroundings, several Gothenburg hotels have made wellness a major part of their offer. Upper House is particularly associated with elevated city views, while Jacy’z combines its hotel, restaurants and pool-club atmosphere with a much more modern version of the urban spa experience.

These places can work even if your main reason for visiting Gothenburg is not wellness. A spa afternoon between sightseeing and dinner is often enough – especially after a cold day beside the harbour.

A spa break outside the centre

For something closer to a dedicated spa escape, Arken Hotel & Art Garden Spa lies away from the busiest central streets, towards the harbour environment. It makes more sense if relaxation is a major part of your trip rather than simply an hour or two between attractions.

My advice is not to choose solely by the longest treatment list. Think about the kind of Gothenburg trip you want. Hagabadet suits history and atmosphere, a central hotel spa is convenient for a weekend break, while a spa further from the centre can become the destination itself.
