If you are visiting Gothenburg with children – or simply want an indoor attraction that does not feel like a compromise – Universeum is one of my easiest recommendations. It sits close to Liseberg in the city’s event district, so it is also simple to combine with other attractions.
Universeum is part science centre, part aquarium and part indoor adventure. The rainforest is usually the section people remember best. You move through a warm, humid environment with plants, birds and other animals around you, which feels surprisingly far removed from the streets of Gothenburg outside.
More than an aquarium
The aquariums are another highlight, but I would not describe Universeum simply as an aquarium. Much of the attraction is built around science, technology, nature and hands-on discovery. That makes it particularly useful when travelling with children of different ages because everyone tends to find something that catches their attention.
I would allow several hours rather than trying to squeeze Universeum into a packed sightseeing schedule. It is also worth remembering that this is one of Gothenburg’s best-known family attractions, so busy weekends and school holidays can feel very different from a quiet weekday.
A good rainy-day choice
Gothenburg weather can change quickly, and Universeum is one of those places worth keeping in reserve for a wet or windy day. You are indoors for most of the visit, and afterwards you are close to Liseberg, Scandinavium, Korsvägen and several museums.
Even without children, I think Universeum is worth considering if you enjoy natural history, aquariums or interactive science. It is tourist-friendly, easy to reach by tram and genuinely offers enough variety to fill a substantial part of the day.
